help
Hi. I just got feather to install on my old pentium mmx laptop (166mhz). It runs beautifully from the live cd and completes the install process when I chose to install it to HD.
BUT I CANT LOG IN! How does one login to see that desktop once it is installed on the HD? I always set my password as x. What is the username for the desktop? Seriously, I know this is probably a dumb question with an obvious answer, but I can't figure it out! Is it "user" or "root" or something like that? |
This was posted in reply to another (unrelated) thread and should've been by itself, so it has been moved to start a new thread.

thanks. I am new to this thing. Anyhow... how do you login to your linux desktop once it is installed????
|
On every installation I've performed, it asked for both a username and password during the installation. You could try 'root' and the password you supplied if it only asked for a password.

actually root sort of works. then i get the prompt line:
root@box1:~# what then? |
Type "startx"

I have decided to install Windows 2000 pro back on my computer. While my computer is ONLY a pentium 1 mmx, it runs windows 2000 pro just fine, with all of windows power and flexibility. And I don't have to type root, startx, or anything for that matter to get it to boot to my desktop!
If feather ever advances to the capability requirements of my pentium one, let me know. Also if ANY version of linux will boot without you having to mess around in a DOS-prompt-like environment first, let me know. This is why linux has paired up with microsoft finally. Some things just work better. And they usually cost money. There... I feel better now. |
