FC6 - blender problems
Hi
I have found an unusual problem one which I have never seen before. The problem is with Fedora core 6 (64 bit) and blender. Blender loads up fine on Fedora core 6 but as soon as I start to create an object then the whole screen goes blank and put me directly back to the login page. It is not a one off thing this happens every time I try and model something in blender the whole thing turns blank and puts me back to the login page. There is no delay, no warning and no error message so I am not sure if its the OS system or if its blender its self that has the error. I run blender on fedora core 5 and it seems to work fine its only on Fedora core 6 that problems start to appear.
To tell you the truth I was really looking for world in Fedora Core 6 but it seems they have rushed it a bit and things don't work. I hope Fedora core 7 is better. In the mean time its a question of solve the problem on core 6 or go back to core 5 or investigate other OS systems.
Although the main reason why I chose Fedora is because almost every application I need works on fedora a simple RPM package which can easily be installed on the PC (I am not a fan on tar installation files)
As a student designer I heavily rely on blender, gimp, and other image manipulating programs I also rely on sound manipulation programs which are used in order to put custom sound clips into my designs. I chose Linux mainly because it is extremely fast (especially blender I have never seen any other program which can build a model as fast as blender can), reliable, and robust. To add to all that I love an OS system which changes all most on a daily rate seeing new programs and new technology that come out.
So if I do go with another OS system it will have to be able to update its self on a regular basis, it must run all the necessary image manipulating programs (this includes video editing) and sound programs. It also has to be able to run my wireless card which is (DWL-G510) (it was a bugger getting it to work on FC5). I also looking for something which does not look boring (im a little picky on that) you know sometimes I think to my self why not come up with a new visual display screen for a new or existing OS system which I can give to a programmer to build
ok i think im going off track here.....
So any ideas or suggestions?

The problem you have sounds like it could be something to do with the 3d graphics driver you are using. Have a look in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file for lines with EE in them for error messages.
As for other distros. I use Ubuntu 6.10 (this version called Edgy Eft). blender runs OK, although I did previously find some weird corruptions when running in full screen mode. Starting it with the -w option makes it run in windowed mode, and these problems don't occur (the precise problem was that buttons sometimes didn't re-draw themselves properly).
Ubuntu is only a 1 CD download, and it's a quite install so if you don't get on with it for any reason it's not such an investment of effort. Of course, backup before installing new OSes!

Thankyou for your help matthewg42
I did look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log and i found one error:
(EE) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable
Sorry for sounding a bit stupid but what do I do next now that I have found it?

Try turning AIGLX off and try to use blender again.
You might not get so many fancy eye-candy effects with AIGLX off, but that's a small price to pay to use a critical app. Further up the page in that link there is a mention that running "other GL applications" may suffer "weird effects". Seems like instant death to X is a pretty weird effect! I guess they still have some bugs to iron out. If turning AIGLX off solves the problem, it's probably worth making a bug report against AIGLX.
