FC4-Ubuntu locks up tight atleast once a day!

I recently installed FC4 and tried it out for a week or two , realizing it was to bloated for my taste i installed ubuntu 5.10 . The one thing that has been happening regardless of which distro it is , is that it locks up atleast once a day , usually while the screensaver is running , but not limited to just that. I then try to use the "CTRL/ALT/BACKSPACE" combo and that does nothing. I always end up having to do a hard reboot. Everything else seems to run just great on this PC with linux . Here is some info on the PC it is trying to run on .

Compaq Presario
801 MHz
768 M SDRAM (PC133)
ATI Radeon 7500 128M videocard
KIA something or other chipset/motherboard
30G maxtor HD

I am currently running Memtest86+ , i haven't been home to check the results just yet.

If someone could just point me in the right direction or know of anything that might help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

yeah, if you can part with the resources for a day or two, pull out a ram stick and run a few days, if all ok, try a different stick.

i had the same problem a year ago.
bad stick.
