FC4 freezes when alt-Fn keys used and at logout

I'm using FC4, and coming from other distros, I'm used to using the alt-Fn key to open up a new session without X, however when I tried to do it on FC4 it just gives me a black screen, and freezes up. (I have heard on FC3 that it took you to the GDM.) Well now when I log out using X, it gives me the same trouble, not taking me to the GDM like it should. whats the deal here? And is there a way so I can get a console login screen instead of the GDM?

It's usually ctrl+alt+fn, not just alt+fn. If that's not your problem make sure that getty is lisytening on all of your terminals. Also check the logs and ps to make sure gdm is dying for some reason.
