Fatal Server Error

Hi,
I have a problem .
I can't log into X as a user, but I can as root.
I get this message if I try and log in as ludwig:
fatal server error
PAM authentication failed;cannot start X server
perhaps you do not ahve console ownership

this problem started when I changed the permissions of some files.
I tried to get my mail by typing
#mail
but I got a message saying that I didn't have permission to access /var/spool/mail/ludwig

so I logged i nas root and changed ownership so that I could get at
/var/spool/mail/ludwig

However, when I did that and tried to log back in,I couldn't.
I can't remember exactly which permissions I changed.
I know I only changed the permission for var and spool and mail files.

Can someone help me here?

EDIT: the owner ship of /Var is now lp
lp is also the goup.
I don't know if this was the case before.
The owner (lp) is the only one to have rights to /var which are read write and execute.
Is this right?
shouldn't the owner be root?

well,I seem to have resolved the situation by leaving the ownership of /var as it is but just enabling read and write rights for others.
that seems to have worked, I think
