That's an known issue in the 2.4.x kernel series, and Hans Reiser and his crew were working on it; I don't know if it has been fixed in newer kernel versions.
As far as reiser vs. ext2 goes- reiser is a journalling filesystem (as is ext3), which means that it's more resistant to filesystem corruption. Under certain circumstances, reiser is also faster than ext2/3.
