Hello Netrack! If you can do it, just try installing the linux again. Try installing all the packages. As I know, redhat always configured the gui, so I had no problkems with it. Maybe it could be a hardware problem. But don't sue me if I'm wrong, I'm still learning.

i have re-installed it, and i get the same answer, im thinking it might be my video card possible because right now i have to use a generic VGA b/c red hat doesnt support it

Well, I never had problems with the graphic card, so I can't help you. I can just recommend you to try other linux disrto if it is possible.

Have you installed the VMWare tools after you have installed the Redhat 8.0 under VMWare? Until you do that you do not get the X up and running as it will give you the error that you are getting.

Try running startx after installing the VMWare tools.

If you want a graphical login, edit /etc/inittab
there is a line which says default:3

change that to default:5 and that should get you to a graphical login screen after you boot up.
