Extracting application data from .fic .ndx files
 

Hi,

I have been using proprietary software to register sales, client info, etc. for several years and would like to extract the data so that I can use it, putting it into a database or in some convenient format (csv, plain text files, xml, etc.).

The files are readable, you can actually see words and sentences, numbers which correspond to data, etc., however they are (I think) binary files with .fic and .ndx extensions, there is tons of non-sensical characters, (I would say 95% of the characters) in the files, which are very long.

I have googled it and have learned that they are database-related files and can be read by certain programs and tools, but have not been able to figure out how to go about reading them and actually converting them into human readable format.

I'd prefer this process to be as automated and as simple as possible, but am a programmer (not profession) and could write some code as well.

Any ideas? Any takers?

What's missing from this picture is the actual name and version of the "proprietary software to register sales, client info, etc", the exact names of the "certain programs and tools" you mentioned and likely an explanation why you're not using your "proprietary software to register sales, client info, etc" to export the data. I hope you understand that without posting that (why withhold it in the first place?) nothing but conjecture remains...
