Extending filesystems/LVMs in linux
Hi
Ive been reading a guide about extending LVM volumes. One thing i noticed is that when using RHEL 3 you have to umount the filesystem, run lvextend, do a filesystem check (not necessary, but nice) and then do the actual extending of the filesystem with resize2fs before mounting the filesystem again and when using RHEL 4 you only have to use lvextend to extend the LVM volume and ext2online to extend the filesystem without having to umount the filesystem.
What is the difference between RHEL3 and RHEL4 that makes you have to umount the filesystem when using RHEL3, is it the version of the ext3 filesystem (assuming that ext3 is used ..and it is used in this example) or is it something else ? If it is the version of the ext3 filesystem, then from what version of it can you only run lvextend and ext2online instead of having to unmount the filesystem, run lvextend, a filesystem check, resize with resize2fs etc. ?
