EXT3-fs panic

I have an HP tc2120 with 256mb ram running Red hat 7.3 kernel 2.4.18-3.

Last night I started copying files from a Windows NT 4.0 server to the machine over Samba. At some point during the copy the Linux machine displayed this message:

Kernel panic: EXT3-fs panic (device sd(8,1)): load_block_bitmap: block_group >= groups_count - block_group = 131071, groups_count = 3727

Now if I try to copy any additional files to that Linux Server I get an "access denied" error returned.

I am using the latest Samba 3.0 Red hat 7.3 RPM that I downloaded yesterday.

Any ideas what may be causing this?

It looks like it doesn't like the ext3 file system; there is something the kernel didn't like at all about some block-count statistics.

Try to run the file system checker from a console:

<enter root password>
unmount /dev/hd...
e2fsck -f /dev/hd...
mount /dev/hd...

If it's your root file system:
telinit 1
mount -o remount,ro /dev/hd...
e2fsck -f /dev/hd...
mount -o remount,rw /dev/hd...
telinit 5 (or whatever the previous value was, see the "runlevel" command for this)

Is this kernel patched to have complete support with ext3?
