Expanding on File Permissions with multiple groups

Hello,

Earlier in the day I noticed a thread on file permissions and ownership but I want to expand that question.

Say I have file1 inside the file directory, how would I be able to set multiple group permissions for the file directory?

I understand in essence it is not possible, but I am looking for a way around it.

Say group1 needs to RWX the file directory, while group2 also needs RWX but group3 is only suppose to have the R permission, would it be possible to set all of these up even though I am only limited to assigning the folder 1 group.

If you require more clarification, I will supply it.

Thanks in advance.

as more mass user orientated applications are becoming required yeah unix file permissions don't always cover it. the most popular filesystems support ACL's now, e.g. ext3 and reiserfs. if you mount either with the "acl" option you can use the "setacl" program to add abitrary permissions for as many additional users and groups as you want. I don't know to what extent the acl addon is found though, i think it's a lot newer on reiserfs, and mioght also still be a non-default patch, but ext3 certainly works very well.
