Error while installing netscape 7.1 on linux

I have downloaded netscape 7.1 tar.gz file from netscape site to install new version i.e netscape 7.1 on my linux machine but when i try to install it is giving me the error listed below

./netscape-installer-bin: /lib/i686/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.2.4' not found (required by ./netscape-installer-bin)

As i am a windows chap and new to linux i am unable to guess what this error is all abt ... but it is clear it is searching for some glibc .. whose version is conflicting ..

what i did is got latest glibc version .. and how do i install the same and if u have any idea or steps to doing that it would be highly appreciated

thanks in advance

What do you have?

It sounds like you want to download the correct version of netscape.

The command must work or your system would not be running.

run it as root

/sbin/ldconfig -V

You don't want to attempt to update glibc. You would be asking for a lot more problems.

You need to post the version of glibc that you have like I have posted.

[root@zeus root]# ldconfig -V
ldconfig (GNU libc) 2.3.2

i had written u an email with the file content as i was unable to post it here
This is the output of the command u gave i have given

ldconfig -V > linuxvijay.txt

and this is what is written in the text file

libc.so.6 -> libc-2.2.2.so
libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3 -> libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.so
libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2 -> libstdc++-2-libc6.1-1-2.9.0.so
libc.so.6 -> libc-2.2.2.so
libc.so.6 -> libc-2.2.2.so
libc.so.6 -> libc-2.2.2.so

this is what i found related to libc

ok, it appears that you have glibc 2.2.2

requirements for netscape 7.1..
Linux kernel - 2.2.14 with the following libraries or packages minimums:
• glibc 2.2.4
• gtk+ - 1.2.0 ( 1.2.5 or greater preferred)
• XFree86-3.3.6

your libs are too old,

you need to check the X version...

X -version

you need to check the gtk version...

gtk-config --version

I looked at the 7.1 channel at RedHat Network and it seems that it has the packages to satisfy the requirements.

Have you not upgraded your system yet?
