Error while initializing the sound driver

I have no sound in FC 3, Gnome or KDE using CCRMA kernel 2.6.10-2.1.ll.rhfc3.ccrma and there is no difference with 2.6.11-1.14_FC3. KDE gives me this error message when I boot into it;
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

alsaconf has been run, alsamixer has been set, /usr/sbin/alsactl stored and still NO SOUND. Any ideas anyone?
Thanks.

Go to your KDE control center ->Sound and Multimedia -> Sound system
In the hardware tab.. which Audio Device are you using? It should be set to ALSA. And also make sure that you have write access to all files in the folder /dev/snd.
Can you send us what lsmod shows up?

Try overriding the default device location to /dev/dsp.
Restart the sound system (should refresh artsd) Test for sound.
This should work as you have OSS emulation set up. Again ensure that you have write access to both /dev/snd folder and /dev/dsp
Are you able to get sound if you run as root?
