error in media

hi,
can linux installation media errors stop linux from working. the media which i have (disk1 of redhat 9) fails during media check & the linux is also not working !!!!!!!!(init id x respawning too fast disabled for 5 minutes). can some one please solve this puzzle.

If your media is failing check, then it's a defective CD - and yes, this will likely affect the OS - probably make it uninstallable.

Re-burn the defective CD and reinstall.

How old is the CD-ROM drive you're using? I had a (&^#$(% of a time last term getting linux installed on a box from 1994 because the drive was just too old to read properly from a CD-R. I swapped out the drive with one from my main box, and install went seamlessly.

Maybe the iso file is corrupt. You migght have to redownload.

the drive is from asus & i purchased it in 2002. may be the drive is old , because in my lab where the systems are brand new, linux gets installed !!!!!!!!!
