error:could not allocate partition


Iam installing redhat linux 7.2 and its not allowing me to create root partition giving me the error that "could not allocate partition"

I have 40gb harddisk,5gb primary partition, 29gb extended dos, 6gb unallocated space on which iam installing red hat linux.Windows 98 is already installed on this disk.

anybody??

The default autopartition using unallocated space will create 3 partitions:
/boot
/
swap

Your already using 2 primaries ( an extended partition is considered a primary) and I assume the logical drive is using all of the extended partition. Since you can only have 4 primary partitions the installer fails because it only can create 2.

Your choices are to either to manually create 2 partitions i.e.
/
swap

Its nice to have a seperate /boot but it isn't required. Or you can resize the extended partition the 6GB using windows Partition Magic or boot the 1st install CD to rescue mode and use parted. You can search the web for documentation on GNU parted.

BTW one can create up to 64 partitions on an IDE drive. 4 primaries, 1 primary being designated as an extended and the rest logicals within that extended partition.
