Question environment variables.

I thought this might be better here, but couldn't delete it from the other location..

I have just installed md8.2 which has kernel 2.4.18-6. I'm using KDE window manager 2.2.2.
Can anyone tell me if there is a problem with setting environment variables? I have set classpath and path variables in /etc/profile and ~/.bash_profile, but the applications are never picked up when I try to run them. I could put them in /usr/bin I guess, but I like to keep the applications I am trying to run on a separate partition.
I thought I had read somewhere about KDE ignoring classpath and path settings in profiles. Is this right?
Thanks
