Question Enlightenment

I'm trying to configure my enlightment because I think it's very great looking. Several questions:

1. Is it possible to add apllication shortcuts on the desktop? (I dont think so, but i dont really know...)

2. I tried to configure my user menu, there wasnt a default file.menu. Can someone please post a sample of their file.menu so I can see how the entry's are supposed to be made in the file.menu?

Don't know if I can help

I haven't any idea what "enlightenment" is. For now, I will assume it is some kind of linux distribution. Maybe it's a Graphical User Interface (GUI).

Assume you are using a GUI. If so, you can place icons on your desktop by dragging and dropping them. For instance: I wanted to run Netscape V6.0 from a link (or shortcut icon in Windows-speak) on my desktop. I went to the directory where the executable file was and dragged and dropped it onto my desktop. When a dialogue box came up asking if I wanted to copy, move or link, I chose link. That's all there is too it. Same process works for putting icons on your program selection menu.

Is this what you are looking for?

Enlightenment is a WindowManager like KDE or Gnome. It comes standard with most linux distributions. And dragging and clicking doesnt work.

there's not really a way for enlightenment itself to display icons on the desktop. enlightenment was written as a pure windowmanager, which means it doesn't do any of the icon/file manager stuff. the next release will have a file manager written into it, but it's still probably a few months away.

anyway, if you want desktop icons, then run enlightenment on top of gnome, or....
hmmm... it just occured to me that you might be able to run the gmc (gnome file manager) from inside enlightenment... but i've never tried it. try just typing "gmc" at a terminal window.

anyway, the way i have it running, is that i'm running gnome, and using enlightenment as the default window manager, which looks great, and is easy to use.

How did you do your file.menu?

Okay I've just started on Enlightenment also and you answered my icon questions through your posts.

However concerning the file.menu, is the file.menu located in your home directory?

Second question:
You got Enlightenment running over the top of gmc. Now let's say I logout. How do you save what you setup?

For instance let's say I want my Enlightenment running over the top of gmc desktop to open up a Eterm and XMMS everytime I login. How can I accomplish this?

I know in Solaris you can save the desktop and Solaris will open up that desktop everytime you login or you edit the /usr/openwin/lib/openwin-init file to automatcially open up the progs you want at startup...I think that one is for root though.
So the question is how can I accomplish what Solaris does through the Enlightenment running over gmc desktop.

There must be some kind of config file or save desktop feature. Any ideas?

The BrassMonk
