I use Ubuntu 18.04.1 with the Mate desktop, and Thunderbird.

Recently I have started getting emails with images in the subject.

The images are 3-4 lines high and obscure the lines above and below.

Extremely annoying.

I have seen posts suggesting changing the font can help, but I do not see a way to do this.

How can I block the images?

While I *think* I know what you mean - I'm still not entirely sure exactly what you mean by "getting emails with images in the subject".

Do you mean images in the title of the emails? Images in the body of these emails?

From what I can see in Thunderbird on my system, it looks to me like it's an option in the "View" menu somewhere.

If you're talking about the body of the emails:

Maybe View > Message Body As > Simple HTML or View > Message Body As > Plain Text

If you're talking about images in the title of the emails, this might help.

PS: On doing a search myself, I'm also seeing hits that talk about a "font issue".

I had that problem.

fonts-symbola cured the problem.

Specifically, the problem occurs in folder-view, like checking the inbox. If I get a message saying an order has shipped it could have a picture of a truck that is about 20mm high and 40mm long that obscures lined above and below.

That's what happened to me too. I got one that covered several lines and decided I had to find a fix.
