email forwarding problem CentOS
I am having a problem with a users email when trying to forward. Here is a piece of my log file;
/home/.sites/33/site5/.users/143/azipperer/.forward.bq1: Group writable directory: 17 Time(s)
/home/.sites/33/site5/.users/143/azipperer/.forward: Group writable directory: 17 Time(s)
As far as I can tell it seems to be a permissions problem however I don't know how to set the permissions properly to make it work. Can anyone help me out?
Thanks in advance...

List the access rights for /home/.sites/33/site5/.users/143/azipperer (if that's the dir) with "stat -c %a dirname" (or more commonly used: "ls -ld dirname"). It probably will show mode 0770 due to default umask settings. Then change with "chmod 0750 dirname".

Thanks, I followed your post and unfortunately it did not work...
When I checked the permissions here is when came back;
[servername ~]# stat -c %a /home/.sites/33/site5/.users/143/azipperer
2771
so I used chmod 0750 /home/.sites/33/site5/.users/143/azipperer
then I rechecked and it came back as 750. When I send mail to it is doesn't forward. Is there anything else that could cause this? I have other domains on this server that forward fine. Is it possible that it's just a problem with this domain? or user?
Regards,
John

If it doesn't work, what does the log say? BTW, if it has the setgid bit set, it is there for a reason. Better chmod it back to 2771. If you have a similar setup without forwarding problems you could compare what owner.group combo owns the directory the .forward is in and what's the access rights are, and same for the .forward file itself.
The problem can be remedied but that's not "the right way". Pick one working and one failing account. Try to email them separately, as root, like this: "/usr/lib/sendmail -v -d44.4 -bv $user@$host | tee /tmp/sendmail.debug.$user". Now diff the two logs and post the result.

Thanks again, the only thing I'm lost on is the"diff the two logs", how do I do that?

Say you have two accounts: "jcereus" and "azipperer" and the host is called "servername".
Then you would make the logs like this:
/usr/lib/sendmail -v -d44.4 -bv jcereus@servername | tee /tmp/sendmail.debug.jcereus
/usr/lib/sendmail -v -d44.4 -bv azipperer@servername | tee /tmp/sendmail.debug.azipperer
and then compare them like this saving result in /tmp/sendmail.debug.diff to read/post:
diff -u /tmp/sendmail.debug.jcereus /tmp/sendmail.debug.azipperer > /tmp/sendmail.debug.diff

Here is what comes back, I hope this is what your looking for... FYI, I removed the domain names for the output.

I hope this is what your looking for
I'm not lookin for something. I'm just helping you look in the right direction.
If you "grep FATAL /tmp/sendmail.debug.azipperer|sort|uniq" you'll see two problems:
- The "0757" can not be explained as it gives WORLD WRITABLE RIGHTS to anyone wanting to write to /home/.sites/33/site5 which, in a webhosting environment, can't be of any good no matter the reasons given. Change to mode 0751 (or if you get complaints to 0755 after investigating what gets executed where by which user). After taking away this world write, .forward *should* work: do test.
- The "775" can be explained by the need for group members writing to that directory but you would have to find out exactly which groups and members these are, because if I look at the structure the sites/user dirs are deeper down. If there are no groups needing it, I suggest changing to mode 0755.
Now you have got:
- the means to change file and directory mode,
- the test method to test what mode changes do,
- the indication what is wrong.
(AFAIK)

Thanks for your help... still not working though. I don't want to take up any more of your time and I don't have the experience in linux to resolve this one. To add insult to injury, the customer is getting pissed off (they are a law firm) so I'll have to move the domain to a different server.
Thanks again your direction was greatly appreciated.

Me too..
This server was doing everything we needed it to do until this issue.
Hopefully, I'll get it figured out. It's really a great system, CentOS with BlueQuartz (explains the dir structure)and running Open Web Mail for the webmail interface.
Anyway, thanks again for you expert help.

Well, if you're not ready to give up, then I guess I better stick with it as well...
Since it's not working, could you run the sendmail test again and show it from where it says "safedirpath(/etc/mail"?
Can you read back logs to when this behaviour started?
Have there been any changes in that area on or before that date?

These users are all in the same domain. The only thing I can find that is different with this domain setup is that it has Frontpage Extensions enabled.... is it possible that that is causing the issue?

These users are all in the same domain. The only thing I can find that is different with this domain setup is that it has Frontpage Extensions enabled.... is it possible that that is causing the issue?
Not FP itseIf I think, but I could imagine that for FP to work it needs to be able to give certain users or groups read+write rights to certain directories and that widening those rights the way it's done here might be causing it. Do you happen to have a test or staging box to mimic the setup on to test it?

Thanks for your help, unfortunately the customer could not wait and requested we move to a different server....
I will see if we have any domains we own on that server and enable the FP extensions to see what happens. If the problem happens again, if so I'll be back.
