Email Backups of Cyrus, web etc...

Hey All!

I need to do regular backups of my server. It hosts my mail and website, and losing that is death for me.

Website is easy to backup, I can tar the document root and do a database dump and tar that too. Set it all in the crontab.

What about Cyrus? I have Cyrus running as an IMAP server, what would I do do backup all emails from all folders on Cyrus?

Now here is the fun part. I want the backups so automated that I never need to look at it. My plan is this.

I want to mail the tar.gz files generated from the backup to an offsite email server.

someuser@somesite.com.

I am familiar a bit with the mail command. But I cannot seem to find an option to attach files.

Should I use mail command? Or is there another way to do, like give it over to postfix somehow to send it.

Thanks,

David

Well, I myself wouldn't send backups of mail or any file over email, I would look into other solutions to make backups, buy a small tape drive, or even a burner (weekly type backup, etc).

But I say just use the sendmail command.. and use the < to attach a file..

Ex:

sendmail "blah@blah.com" < filename.tar.gz

Ok, I figured out what to backup, unfortunatly I have to shutdown my cyrus server during backups.

Just out of curiosity I wanted to see what happens if someone sends mail while cyrus is done:

Dec 20 23:08:02 linux postfix/pipe[3902]: 08284C606: to=<me@mydomain.tld>, relay=cyrus, delay=14, status=deferred (temporary failure. Command output: couldn't connect to lmtpd: Connection refused_ 421 4.3.0 deliver: couldn't connect to lmtpd_ )

How do I get postfix to hang on to the message until the server is available again?

I want to specify how long postfix holds on to the message before failure.

Secondly, on a relay server. Can I say for domain: whatever.tld, never give up. Just keep retrying every X minutes?

Thanks,

David

Postfix should queue the message up and deliver afterwards, etc.
