Eliminating or redirecting boot messages

Hey, I'm using MEPIS on a wee little pc that I've got. I'm setting it up to boot the way I like it and I came upon a question. Can I somehow turn off or redirect all the boot messages to another screeen? I realize it's neat, and a great way to see whats going on, but if everything's running all right and I don't plan on changing it anytime soon, I'd like to make the boot a silent as possible. It's equivalent to waking up and having to tell yourself "my heart is pumping, my knees still bend, my eyes are opening...etc."

I just want a silent austere boot. Ya know what I mean?

Thanks in advance!

You could append the line:

"console=ttyS0"

to your kernel from the boot loader. What that does it redirect the boot messages to a serial console (it doesn't matter if it doesn't exist). Which will stop the boot messages from showing up on the monitor.

Radical! Thanks! Could you possible redirect them to another console? And how does one accomplish that? Oh yeah, and how do you define how many consoles there are? And while I'm at it, how do you automatically start more than one X instance?

Lol

MORE TROUBLE!

Thanks!

You could change the "ttyS0" to one of the other text consoles (tty2 for example) and that would redirect it to another console.

As for how many consoles, that can be changed in /etc/inittab. I imagine there is a limit as to how many you can have, but I'm not sure. The limit might even be 6.

I'm not sure what you mean about X, but if it involves starting sessions, you will find that in /etc/inittab as well.

Thanks a bunch. There's only one more thing. Can I redirect the INIT messages as well? Does this require me making a different ttySX the default somehow?
