Editing the gnome menu
 

Hi,

I'm having trouble editing the application menu in gnome 2.6 (FC2), I cant edit it either directly by right clicking on a menu item nor can I edit it by "applications:///" in the nautilus browser

I have already tried
it is said that this only works in RH9 and FC1, but I tried it anyway, I've also tried as previously suggested on this forum by editing the *.desktop files in /usr/share/applications but this has no effects. Please give me a few ideas on how to solve this

try editing your menu as root, it worked for me system wide. I however believe that there is another method, which you can search for on google.

I found that by editing the files in /usr/share/applications I could edit the gnome menu is I wanted, there was just one app that I couldn't move but got around this by unistalling it (was an rpm package) and then compiling said program from source and adding a file for that program in /usr/share/applications, and this sorted it. But thanks anyway

Did you find any of these suggestions helpful? I am trying to do the same thing.

The best way to go about it is to go to /usr/share/applications and copy one of the existing *.desktop files and alter it to suit the app you want it to point to.

There is a problem with FC2 where you cannot alter the menu by typing "applications:///" in the address bar of nautilis either as a normal user or root, I'd expect the same problem to exist with FC1, I don't know of any other way to alter the menu though. You can try copying default-modules.conf.with-menu-editing to default-modules.conf as outlined in my first post as this was supposed to work in FC1, in didn't work in FC2 though which is what I had at the time - remeber to back up your original default-modules.conf before writing over it

I am currently using FC3. I tried those commands, but now the Gnome Menu is not working anymore:(

If your referring to copying that configuration file then just copy the default-modules.conf.without-menu-editing back to default-modules.conf

I'll try to follow your advice. But I didn't backup my modules.conf before. I wonder what happends if I copy the files from another person..
