Editing Startup processes in Runlevels

If I want to remove a processes from starting up in runlevel 2, do I just remove it from rc2.d or is there a better way?

Removing it from rc2.d is fine. I would recommend that you comment out the script rather than delete the file entirely.

Do not do this! On [almost] all of the distributions the files in rc?.d are links to files in a master directory. Editing this will edit the file for every runlevel. Commenting it out means no runlevel will have it any more. This is the wrong thing(tm) and even if you wanted to get rid the the script entirely, it is better to delete it in all the directories.

Delete... do not edit.

Edit: Note, I say "[almost] all" because I can't speak for every single distribution on the planet but I've never run in to one where these were copies instead of links. Anything is possible... so I won't rule it out... but I would be very interested if any distribution didn't use links.

So in summary, what way is correct? Removing the symbolic link from the run level I want to edit?
