editing read only files

when we view a file owned by some one else and in which i have read permission only, the editor prompts "changing a read only file". and then allows u to make the changes. while trying to save the changes, the editor prompts to overide with !. once this is done, the ownership changes and i become the owner. how do i protect against this?

Change the permissions as root before you edit it with VI.
