(I have done this...)
Connect two PCs VIA a crossover serial cable, start a getty for the serial connection on one PC (in /etc/inittab), connect from the other from minicom.
Usually I am more interested in connnecting from an old PC or VT terminal and not concerned about transfering files.
(This I have not done (sucessfully) myself...)
There is a lrzsz program that is made for serial file transfer. I had trouble with it the little I tried to use it.
Both it and minicom can be hard to set up.

If the PCs have network cards scp, and a crossover network cable would be much easier.

Thanks folks. The backup pc has no network card so serail (or parallel) is the only way to go direct. I'll look into those links.

thanks again,
