easily switch between X and text mode

Hi,

I'm wondering if there is a fast way to switch from text mode to graphical mode and vice versa.

Right now, when i boot RH9, it goes directly to graphical mode.
And i know it can be changed in that file which i cannot remember the name :)

But is there a way to do it quicker? "on the fly"?

X to console = Ctrl + Alt + F1toF6
console to X = Alt + F7

My RedHat 8.0 OS, I can switch between text mode and graphical mode log in by pressing the following keys.

ctrl-alt-F1

There are 6 login terminals that correspond with the function keys. The F7 keys brings you back the GUI login or desktop

F1..F6

To switch between each log in terminal, you would do two of the following things

alt-F# <- switches you the need terminal

or

alt-left_arrow / alt-right_arrow <- work only while you are in text mode. But when you are back to the GUI, you must use the ctrl-alf-F#

alt+F1 opens up the menu. F2, F3, ... doesn't take me to text mode either.

Oh, i'm using RH9 with VMware. That might be why it doesn't work.

it's Ctrl-Alt-F[1-6] for the terminals....you need to remember the Ctrl key...

Still doesn't do anything.

ctrl+alt+F1 maximizes my vmware window.
ctrl+alt+F[2-12] does nothing.

Could it be because i'm using VMware?

Yeah, that's probably why.

Whats the system you're running it under VMware?

Pressing CTRL+ALT in Vmware makes vmware lose the keyboard input (After pressing CTRL+ALT, your linux system doesn't receive input anymore until you click on the window again... ). Check with vmware help to see how to use ctrl+alt switching (there must be something)

RH90 in VMware under winXP

ahhh... that was why.

I changed the Hot Key combination in VMware to ctrl+alt+shift.
Now, ctrl+alt+F1 takes me to text mode. Exactly what i wanted!

Cool. Thanks for the help guys.
