e-mail troubles

hi,
I have just installed fetchmail, configured, using pine.
it works, but at every login the "you have mail" message is displayed.
the /var/spool/mail/<username> file contains just the default message:

"From MAILER-DAEMON Thu Jul 8 14:16:27 2004
Date: 08 Jul 2004 14:16:27 +0200
From: Mail System Internal Data <MAILER-DAEMON@libero.it>
Subject: DON'T DELETE THIS MESSAGE -- FOLDER INTERNAL DATA
Message-ID: <1089288987@libero.it>
X-IMAP: 1089288899 0000000001
Status: RO

This text is part of the internal format of your mail folder, and is not
a real message. It is created automatically by the mail system software.
If deleted, important folder data will be lost, and it will be re-created
with the data reset to initial values."

if i clean the /var/spool/mail/<username> file, obviously, the message is recreated and i get "you have mail." at login.
how to solve this stupid problem?

thanks for your help
-mario
