Question DVD problems, unable to read them.

Hello,
I'm a newbie running RedHat 8.0, and am now trying to set up my dvd drive to play dvds.

I have recently installed Ogle, and everything installed OK. The problem is actually reading the DVD.
I get the following errors:

Debug[ogle_nav]: Opening DVD at "/mnt/cdrom/VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.IFO"
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.2 for DVD access
libdvdread: Can't open file VIDEO_TS.IFO.
vm: faild to read VIDEO_TS.IFO

I have looked and people seem to be have this problem often, but I can't find a fix for it..
Any help would be much appreciated

can't help you w/ ogle, but I would suggest trying Mplayer (http://www.mplayerhq.hu). It doesn't rely on any external libraries to run (I don't think :-)

I can play encrypted DVDs with MPlayer as well as .avi and .mpg files. It's a good player.

Have you got a '/dev/dvd' link to your DVD drive? When I click on 'Open disc' I get:

Debug[ogle_nav]: Opening DVD at "/dev/dvd"
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.2 for DVD access
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.2 for DVD access
Debug[ogle_nav]: sending audio demuxstream 0
...

It plays fine.

well kind off. all recent distributions of mplayer come with a package called mpdvdkit. This is a collection of the libraries that ogle uses, libdvdread and libdvdcss (the ogle guys actually wrote libdvdread afaik), but slightly hacked and improved by the mplayer dev's. it's 99% the same code but "personalised" and then normally statically linked inside your mplayer binary. so it does use external libraries, but it brings them with them, so you'd never really know. MPlayer rocks.

Unhappy Can't Play DVD

I have the problem too, i use slackware 8.1. it says:

dvd_reader: opening /dev/dvd...
dvd_reader: reset drive
dvd_reader: authenticate drive
libdvdread: Can't open file VIDEO_TS.IFO.
vm: faild to read VIDEO_TS.IFO

when i click the d5d on xine, or the same thing when i use mplayer. i kno i link the /dev/dvd to /dev/scd0, and thatz my DVD-CDROM drive, but it can't read it, i dunno how to fix it, but my vcd, cda, and other stuff works, only my DVD doesn't work.

so help me!

You don't need to mount the disc, simply type:
mplayer -vo xv -dvd 1

This will play the dvd straight from the drive. I am guessing that's your problem.

Welcome to LQ

Cool
