Unhappy DVD burning error

Hi all.

I'm trying to burn a DVD on a RedHat Enterprise 4 machine (kernal 2.6.9-5.ELsmp) and running into problems regardless of how I go about the procedure. For example, when I pop a new DVD in the machine, gnome immeidately opens a burning window. When I try to burn a DVD, regardless of the amount of data slated for burning I get teh error:

:-( write failed: Input/output error
:-[ WRITE@LBA=0h failed with SK=3h/ASC=72h/ACQ=01h]: Input/output error
/dev/hdd: "Current Write Speed" is 16.4x1385KBps.

I've also tried using K3B. Same problem:

3h/ASC=72h/ACQ=01h]: Input/output error
/dev/hdd: "Current Write Speed" is 16.4x1385KBps.

I've looked at the debugging output and get:

System
-----------------------
K3b Version:0.11.14
KDE Version: 3.3.1-3.6 Red Hat
QT Version: 3.3.3

growisofs
-----------------------
INFO: UTF-8 character encoding detected by locale settings.
Assuming UTF-8 encoded filenames on source filesystem,
use -input-charset to override.
/dev/hdd: "Current Write Speed" is 16.4x1385KBps.
:-[ WRITE@LBA=0h failed with SK=3h/ASC=72h/ACQ=01h]: Input/output error
:-( write failed: Input/output error

growisofs comand:
-----------------------
/usr/bin/growisofs -Z /dev/hdd -use-the-force-luke=notray -use-the-force-luke=tty -use-the-force-luke=dao -dvd-compat -speed=16 -gui -graft-points -volid Hawaii SAR Data -volset -appid K3B THE CD KREATOR VERSION 0.11.14 (C) 2003 SEBASTIAN TRUEG AND THE K3B TEAM -publisher -preparer K3b - Version 0.11.14 -sysid LINUX -volset-size 1 -volset-seqno 1 -sort /tmp/kde-mpoland/k3bQOSFnc.tmp -rational-rock -hide-list /tmp/kde-mpoland/k3bD9GoZa.tmp -full-iso9660-filenames -iso-level 2 -path-list /tmp/kde-mpoland/k3bk6G6lb.tmp

Has anyone else come across this, and is there an obvious fix? I used K3B on the previous RedHat release (Enterprise 3) and it worked just fine. CDs will burn fine on this release, but I always get the I/O error when burning DVDs. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Mike

try burning a cd from the console

cdrecord -v dev=/dev/cdrom -speed 16 -dao -driveropts=burnfree -eject file.iso

you may need updated cdrtools if it fails update your kernel.

Unhappy K3B burning problems

I have same problem as reported above when I try to record data on a DVD disk. The error that K3B produces is:

System
-----------------------
K3b Version:0.11.16
KDE Version: 3.2.3
QT Version: 3.3.3

growisofs
-----------------------
/dev/hdc: "Current Write Speed" is 16.4x1385KBps.
:-[ WRITE@LBA=0h failed with SK=3h/ASC=72h/ACQ=01h]: Input/output error
:-( write failed: Input/output error

growisofs comand:
-----------------------
/usr/bin/growisofs -Z /dev/hdc -use-the-force-luke=notray -use-the-force-luke=tty -use-the-force-luke=dao -dvd-compat -speed=16 -gui -graft-points -volid K3b data project -volset -appid K3B THE CD KREATOR VERSION 0.11.16 (C) 2003 SEBASTIAN TRUEG AND THE K3B TEAM -publisher -preparer K3b*-*Version*0.11.16 -sysid LINUX -volset-size 1 -volset-seqno 1 -sort /tmp/kde-root/k3b4Cq1tc.tmp -rational-rock -hide-list /tmp/kde-root/k3b4DxnAb.tmp -joliet -hide-joliet-list /tmp/kde-root/k3b2aTlpc.tmp -full-iso9660-filenames -max-iso9660-filenames -iso-level 2 -path-list /tmp/kde-root/k3bc6vFha.tmp

WTF!! And this is both as normal and root users.

Same problems I've got when I try to burn using the command: growisofs -Z /dev/hdc -R -J /home/maxei/mp3

I just can't make a f***ing dvd backup of my mp3 files!

I just installed nero for linux (demo version). Halas, no. this shit is not better than k3b or command line. I'm desperate. How can I troubleshoot the problem? Is it because I bought shitty dvds (+R) or my f***ing BENQ DVD burner is just good for the garbage, or ... or..?

Please help. Thanks

S.o.s. !!!

By the way I am displaying the output when I start k3b as root from command line, for the curious one and for the expert ones as well. Hope that some illuminated mind happens to read this desperate S.O.S. !!!!S.O.S.!!!
