dvd and mandrake 8.0

I have a problem with my dvd player.Mandrake
recognizes it as a cdrom(/dev/hdd),but when i
run xine i get this error
input_dvd:unable to open dvd drive(/dev/dvd):
no such file or directory.
How do i tell the system that this is a dvd drive?

which version of xine are you using? for some reason, the more recent versions don't work on dvd unless the drive is specified as /dev/dvd. the 0.43 version worked on different drives, but i haven't been able to get the 0.5 version to work, even if i change the directory specified in the source. i think they just released a 0.9, but i haven't tried it yet.

Becuase Xine has the location of the DVD drive hard coded in to it the developers could not know which IDE device the DVD actually is.

As a result you need to create a symbolic link:

As root:

Code:
ln -s /dev/hdd /dev/dvd

- already tried that. what hit me as strange is that i went into the code and changed the /dev/dvd to where it is on my box - it's specified as a second cdrom drive. /cdrom2. that didn't help.

DVDs are accessed directly, not over a file system. Access /dev/hdd and don't mount it first.
