Dual Monitors Dell 700m Laptop

I was wondering how I might get my Dell 700m laptop (running Slack 10.1) to use BOTH the laptop screen and an External monitor. I have Googled around the next and have found many tutorials, but of all the ones I have found the solution has either not worked, or it has set it up to use one monitor or the other, but not both at the same time.

I am using a Sony SDM-HS75 as the external. I have tried "X - configure" to automagically set it up but this has not worked wither. I think the problem with the automagic solution is that I had to run it using the default 2.4.30 kernel because for some reason my 2.6 kernel won't let me get to a virtual terminal.

Thanks in advance.
