Dual Booting Red Hat 7.1 and Windows XP
Can any body help me!! I am trying to run a dual boot system with Wondows XP and Rehat 7.1. They are both installed and running but I can't get the bootloader to work. Windows will boot but when I chose Linux I just get a blank screen with a cursor and have to ctr, alt, del out and us my boot disk. Any help is greatly appreciated.

sounds like a problem with /etc/fstab or you might need to use linear in the lilo.conf file
did you make a boot disk? |
A Linux boot disk? Yes
|
Which boot loader are you using? Also, which partitions are xp and linux on? If you are using grub, post a copy of its config file /boot/grub/menu.lst or /boot/grub/grub.conf. If you are using lilo, post /etc/lilo.conf.

seems to me that you are trying to use the NT bootloader...
Just boot you linux install goto a shell, su, then type lilo and hit return. This is what I did to install lilo to the mbr to dual boot XP/Me and linux. I did not need any additonal configuration to make it work. |
If you plop your install CD in and type rescue it will give you (it does me anyway on Mandrake) a choice to fix the bootloader or use XP's (but that's not a good idea cause I can't use Linux that way).

fatgod,
by boot linux install, do you mean my boot disk to get into linux. then at the terminal window type su, then lilo and it should work? |
yes, but check the lilo.conf file, you may need to add windows to the images
|
Yep, as david says... I had similar difficulties with win NT(XP). but the version of lilo that came on suse 7.2 automatically configured itself to boot the win OS.
Just go for it ;) You can always boot of a CD if you have major problems, either RH or win to make one of them boot again, depending on which you love the most ;) But dont worry, be brave! Good Luck! |
