Dual boot systems w/Symantec Ghost
Has anyone here had any experience with cloning dual-boot systems with Symantec (Norton) Ghost?
I work in an academic environment and we recently tried to roll out a small lab with dual boot Win2k/Red Hat 7.3 machines using Symantec Ghost 7.5 Corporate Edition (using multicasting).
So far I have figured out these things:
1. Cloning with Ghost does not work if you're using GRUB. The MBR is not written correctly in the process and although I prefer GRUB to LILO, it's much easier to rewrite LILO to the MBR to fix the problem.
2. Cloning does not work correctly with LILO either, but it can be fixed. You cannot boot into Linux immediately after cloning. Again, the MBR is not copied correctly, but booting with a floppy and running LILO as root promptly fixes the problem. This is an easy solution, but the point of multicasting Ghost images is to reduce the work at each machine.
According to Symantec: "NOTE: Ghost does not support dual booting on a Ghost client computer when the client computer is used with Ghost Multicast Server, GhostCast Server, or Ghost Console." Symantec says they don't support this (yet tell you the work-around on their web site).
If anyone has tried this, is there a work-around to make LILO work immediately after cloning? This first lab was only 20 pcs, but if I can get this working, the other IT staff might be comfortable making all the labs dual-boot. But it would certainly help if I didn't have to fix LILO on each machine. Any ideas?
Thanks
