Dual Boot 64 Bit
 

Hi everyone,
After receiving Suse 9.3 pro free on DVD with Linux magazine, I decided it was the distro to wipe out my windows install. I did so, and also wiped out my Slack 10.1 install and went for a new partitioning scheme. I have an AMD 64 3000+, so naturally, the suse install is the 64 bit version. My new scheme is as follows:

/dev/hda1 (primary) suse 9.3 root 10GB
/dev/hda2 (Extended) total 143GB
/dev/hda5 (Logical) soon to be slamd64 root 10GB
/dev/hda6 Linux Swap 1GB
/dev/hda7 /home for both distro's 132GB

This should effectively take my machine from 2 32 bit OS's to 2 64Bit Linux distro's. Suse seemed to be a safe logical replacement for windows for my wife to use and for me to have web use etc. I haven't yet installed slamd64, but suse has mounted /dev/hda5 as 'data1' and it has just 'lost+found' on it. I want to use this partition for slamd64 so would formatting it screw up suse even if I removed it from fstab?
And would the 2 OS's then work along side each other and share the swap and /home partitions?

I would go with two 10gb partitions for a /home for each distro just to make sure the menus and things like that do not get screwed up and keep 110gb for a common partition for storing your files in common either that or leave your /home within the / directories and just use all the extra space for files in common. You can remove the hda5 from the fstab without problems I would say it looks like it is just using it for a data partition and your /home is still in the /.
