double boot for winxp & red hat 8.0

hey folks,
i have xp and red hat 8.0 on the same machine.
i can't figure out how to make a double boot . right now i have to boot linux with its boot diskette. i guess i have to configure the boot.ini file. but how can i know what is the partition number to put?
the boot partition of linux is /dev/hdd5 , which doesn't say much for windows...
thank's in advance.

The easiest way is to make a file which contains the first 512 bytes of the partition (also known as the boot record). You can copy this file to the xp partition and add an entry in the boot.ini for this file. There are many tutorials available on the net to get this done and also there have been many threads about dual booting xp and linux. So I advise you to a search for further detailed information.
