does the red hat network throttle bandwidth by user?

just curious...

I registered with the RHN some time ago when I was still in school. When I updated my box last week (with up2date), I was getting 175K downloads (did it twice). I just showed a friend how to do it (he just registered a few days ago) and he's only getting around 30k downloads.... he's updated from them three times in three days and not gotten any better than that. We're both on the same network, so I highly doubt it's anything on our end.

not like this is a big deal or anything, but I was just wondering if my "seniority" gave me higher download speeds or if I just lucked out both times I updated. (we both updated during the day on a weekday) - his update is taking HOURS - mine was done in a few minutes.

(just a guess) There's probably some limit that they have... but it's probably pretty high. I doubt that your seniority had much to do with it, but it's probably more about how many people are using that service (and sucking up resources)

RHN subscriptions comes in two:

one with the Basic that any RH user can get for free. the other one is the paid subscription. When RHN servers experience high load, it prioritizes users with paid subscription.

those with basic will have an Error class code 51 message when attempting to run up2date.
