does not proceed directly to normal display
I have installed SUSE Linux 10.1 and it has been working well up to now. Recently, however, whenever I start up my computer, I am asked to login with the password, then I have to type "startx" before it can connect with the familiar display on the screen which I had set up before. When I try ending the session, for this is all it now allows me to do from the display, and not to turn off the computer, I get back to where I started before login. At this point, the message says:
"waiting for x server to shut down pt subapplication
fatal IO error: client killed"
another message is:
"waiting for x server to shut down the application
softwareupdater lost its connection to the display" 0.0;
most likely the x server was shut down or you killed/destroyed the application."
I see that I somehow severed the connection between where I have to login and the normal display. I don't really know how I did that, the only thing I was trying to do was to download a piece of software so it might have been that. I would like to put things back to normal; that is, switch on my computer and proceed directly to the normal display and likewise when I turn off.
