Does loadkeys affect X?
 

I use loadkeys initially to solve the caps lock <-> ctrl problem.
After installing X now, I find that caps lock in console works as ctrl,
but in X it is still caps lock.

I wanted to make sure that this is in fact the intended behavior
before using the xmodmap method. My reasoning is I would prefer
to solve a problem at the lowest level possible, and I figured using
load keys would swap it permanently for all aspects of the machine.

Nope ... loadkeys is only responsible for full-screen
sessions. X has keymappings of its own that are dis-
junct from loadkeys'.
