Does anyone has any experience with installing Window2003 server and Linux?
 

Right now, I have windows server 2003 on my machine. The whole disk is partitioned into windows server 2003 type filesystem. Right now, I would like to repartition my disk into 2 partitions one for windows 2003 and linux without erase things on my disks. Can anyone please help me out. Thank you very much.

I'm sure Windows 2003 server uses NTFS. There are many instructions on the net for resizing these. ALL of them present some level of risk. I have had success with ntfsresize. It's supposed to be safe. At any rate, I'd do a data backup to another medium before starting if you have anything mission critical.

Most modern Linux distros will automatically resize an NTFS partition during install so you shouldn't need to manually do it before hand, but as mentioned, it's not without risk, especially on a server, so make sure you have a full backup. Otherwise, it shoud be fairly straightforward, with the bootloader automatically configured to move between the two OS'

What kind of Server are you Running? We recently loaded Slackware 10.1 on 3 HP Proliant DL140 3.06 GHz blades and to say the least, it was difficult. If you are using this type (Generation 1) then be aware that lilo 22.5...(??) - the one which ships with slack 10.1 does NOT work when attempting to dual boot. We instead used the latest version of GRUB. This isn't to say that the new version of lilo will not work, but still - if this is the case, you might save urself some time and definitely a great deal of frustration...

It would be also a good idea to run the following check list before you resize the XP partition to make room for the new OS:[list=1][*]"Take out the garbage" -- Remove unecessary files, including Disk Cleanup.[*]Run "checkdsk /f" or the GUI equivalent.[*]Defragment the disk.[/list=1] I have had partition resizing trash an XP (=2003 desktop) installation when the last 2 were skipped.
