does any know % of servers running unix and desktops

Do you know what percent of servers and also desktops run unix..and what the breakdown is..like linux, bsd, mac, solaris, etc. I know unix will have a higher percentage on servers than desktops.

I have heard winblows is ~96% of desktop with Mac ~3% and Linux ~1% is this true and is Linux increasing only at the expense of Mac?

thanks.

You can find some stuff with google...

Like maybe this report that lists the same figures you have....

As far as the other question, I'm willing to bet that Linux is increasing at the expenses of no operating system.

You'll find a surprising (maybe) percentage of internet servers are running something other than MS

I think there is a higher number then 1% of people running Linux. It might be only 1% running linux exclusively but there are more linux users then mac users from what I've heard. And mac doesn't suffer because it isn't exactly easy getting linux and mac os to live in harmony on 1 machine not to mention that there aren't many distros for the PPC.

The number of Linux desktop users reported by Google has been under question a good few times. As far as I can tell, the general gist of it is that Google records the browser ID everytime it's used (whether it marks this against IPs to prevent really skewed results, I don't know), but as we all know, you can change what many browsers report they are - very useful for accessing sites that "recommend you upgrade to IE 6" or whatever. So it's a potential mine-field trying to establish reliable figures for the number of desktop users.
