I could not careless; as long as I can come to LQ!
Yes, but that doesn't necessary mean you prefer a desktop or laptop, as for example, one might use a desktop, because that's what happens to be the most accessible to them. So my question is which to you prefer, out of a desktop or laptop? (or don't care)
Rather than what do you most use out of the two (is your "primary" hardware), which the poll your referring to is asking.
If the specs and price are the same, laptop. Built in UPS, plus monitor, keyboard, mouse. At least until apple gets their way and laptops have no external ports.
Peripheral components are easier and cheaper to replace on a desktop. With a laptop, if you spill liquid on it, it can be ruined. Usually it's the keyboard, some keys will not work after a spill.
I own a laptop because I think it's time I came to terms with some new technology (though I draw the line at tablets/smartphones). I am currently building LFS 8.0 on it and also trying to get it to suspend and hibernate without glitches (not easy using Via graphics). It's a challenge and I like challenges. But I don't like the machine itself. The keyboard doesn't feel like a real keyboard and the trackpad is much more difficult to use than a mouse. For example, when I'm using gpm to copy and paste, I find it very difficult to steer my fingertip in such a way as to capture the line.
When I'm on my desktop, I feel like I'm using a computer. On the laptop, I feel like I'm playing with a toy.
I use both about equally, but, if I could use only one, I'd choose a laptop, because you can take it with you.
As regards computing power, I find no practical difference between the two for home usage.
Full disclosure: My home desktop is more powerful than my laptop, but only because I doubled the RAMs.
I'm pretty much in agreement totally with this. I use both, I do prefer my desktop, but if I only could keep one or the other, I'd keep my laptop because of the mobility.
Voted could care less. I get towers for free from City Hall when they upgrade their gear .
I give my wife a couple bucks for her old gear when I buy her a new laptop. The city supplies her with her work tablets , cellphone, laptop, and desktop also for her job.
Computers are not a big investment for me. Since my computer usage is different than other members here.
My hardware is mainly for distro team debugging before releasing new iso releases.
I throw hardly anything away. So atom n270 touchscreen netbooks, Amrel RT 786EX toughbook, panasonic cf-48, Dell touchscreen XT2,
and IBM T23 see service from time to time.
I am not as active in debugging as I used to be. Because a newer generation is stepping up and
sharing the chores.
As I am typing this out. The wife just got home from work. " Here honey. Another laptop bag." Brought home
from the city office. I am lucky that way.
