dns transfer to new server
 

I have my domain on a shared hosting server using ns1/ns2.mydomain.com

Now, I want to move that particular domain to my own dedicated server (non shared) but I'm not quite sure how to go about doing this as it is already assigned to the shared server for ns1/ns2.

I want to make the new dedicated server for my domain to use ns1/ns2 and the shared to switch to ns3/ns4. I know since September the DNS propagation has become almost instant (not sure where I heard that, but tested it many times myself anyway). I mean I can schedule a "maintenance" day where I can say the server will go down for about 15-20 minutes (every test I did DNS propagated within a few minutes anyway).

I'm not 100% sure how I can still link the shared dedicated server to use ns3/ns4.mydomain.com (on the server, not updating server IP for ns3/ns4 with registrar). How should the DNS zone look for that domain on the shared server, other than changing the ns3/ns4 and its IP's? I mean doesn't it have to point to the dedicated server where the actual domain resides or not?

If its a stupid question, pardon me its been a long day, 1,000 things on my mind and I'm overstocked with work :P

Right so you've registered ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com as name servers whos IP points to the server with the shared hosting? So in your domain regestrars user control panel you should be able to update the IPs of ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com to point to the IP adresses of the new dedicated server then create two more name servers: ns3.domain.com and ns4.domain.com and input the IPs of the shared hosting for them.

PS you should not be using the same IP for both ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com and most likely your registrars user control panel will not allow you to use the same IP

You can put NS records and A records for ns3 and ns4 to point to the old server but i *think* you still need to register the name servers with your domain registrar for ns3 and ns4 to be recognised as real nameservers
