name d = nameserver daemon
the shell script that starts the dns server is in /etc/rc.d/init.d/
the name of this script is called "named"
chkconfig is a program that will read these types of scripts and see a line in the script that tells it the proper runlevels to start and stop the daemon in by running the script file. It will then create the links required for the system to do this in your init scripts
/etc/rc.d/rc0.d rc1.d etc...
by using the command
the scripts will be setup to start and stop as needed, you will not need to do anything else
to see the setting for named use this

these commands will be run by user root
they can be run from a shell login. xterm, console, whichever..
