Smile DNS Question

Hi -
Could somebody please point me in the right direction on how to "Auto start Bind DNS", on startp???

Running Redhat V8.0.

Getting a little tired of manually starting the Bind service, when I boot the machine.

Thanks.....

Got your email, you have email turned off in your profile so that's a one way pipe.

Quote:
Not sure what this means...

name d = nameserver daemon

the shell script that starts the dns server is in /etc/rc.d/init.d/

the name of this script is called "named"

chkconfig is a program that will read these types of scripts and see a line in the script that tells it the proper runlevels to start and stop the daemon in by running the script file. It will then create the links required for the system to do this in your init scripts

/etc/rc.d/rc0.d rc1.d etc...

by using the command
Code:
chkconfig named on
the scripts will be setup to start and stop as needed, you will not need to do anything else

to see the setting for named use this

Code:
chkconfig --list named
you will see this

named 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off

these commands will be run by user root

they can be run from a shell login. xterm, console, whichever..

named does not start

I hope you don't mind me asking,

I can't seem to get named running on RH 8.0.

My firewall is turned off for now, but I'm not directly connected to the NET. Single nic, nothing special about the system, P4 512mb ram, reasonably fast.

I ran "chkconfig named on"

and veriified it with "chkconfig --list named" which produced "named 0ff 1ff 2ff 3n 4n 5n 6ff"

However, I try running:

/etc/init.d/named status

I get :

rndc: connect failed: connection refused

same thing happens with /etc/init.d/named restart

I duplicated this problem on another RH8.0 system.

Additionally, I have tried using nslookup to check a record, and it timed out (I used the server command to point to the . I used the gui tool to make a simple test zone named thissux.com, with a name record called www. I understand DNS, but do not understand bind at all.

Any ideas?

you should see something in /var/log/messages related to the problem

You saved my bacon. I was able to see that named.ca was not loading from the /var/log/messages file. I downloaded the root hints file from internic and I was able to get 2 different RH 8.0 systems to run BIND. I needed to fix a few NS records that I had backwards after that, but no biggy.

Works great, thanks.
