Exclamation dmesg error

I get the following error message when I run dmesg:

Assertion failed! buffer != NULL,via82cxxx_audio.c,via_dsp_write,line=2308

I think this is whyI have no audio in my system (When I try to listen to MP3's on my NTFS drive I get no sound)

Do I need to install any drivers or some kernel stuff?!

Cheers

Distro? Release? Kernel version? Overclocking? Using Nvidia driver as well?

I'm using Red Hat 8.0, I think the Kernel is 8-14....I'm using XP right now as the interent is just annoyingly slow in Linux....

I'm using the on-board crappy AC-97 sound (VIA), I havn't installed any driver for VIA, should I do this?

The sound is all software emulation not hardware.

Do you mean NVidea graphics - I use a radeon card.

I'll post some details in a bit (like the correct Kernel version)...

If you have any problems with your soundcard, compile almost all soundcards as a module. Then try to load them one-by-one.

*) No dmesg errors (soundcard problems)
*) You'll find the right card if you're lucky

Good luck, it can be a pain in the ... these cards indeed.
NVidia means NVidia nForce Audio which is some sort of sound-board.
