Distros

Can somebody please tell me how much space in average does one distro take up? Without the /home being on the same partition. And i mean WITH X-Windows & KDE or GNOME. Hope somebody helps me.

None of my installs have ever exceeded 3 gigabytes.

It really depends on the distro. Check the distros documentation, it should state how much space the distro occupies.

as has been stated.. it depends on the distro.. and what packges you select.. because a lot of them offer a dozen or more window managers by default.. if you are saying KDE *OR* GNOME, then you shouldn't have a problem.. I have installed slackwar 10 on a 2.1 GB hd using fluxbox AND windowmaker, firefox, gaim, xchat, abiword, and sylpheed.. the basics needed for web browsing, chatting, email, etc..

I gave it to my 6-year-old.. she likes windowmaker.. i leave big launch icons for firefox and a couple of games on there... she likes ltris and supertux(runs very slow on there) and a couple others..

if you're trying to squeeze it in there.. and don't plan doing a lot of storage.. ~5GB is good for most any distro.. just watch what packages you are installing..

Yeah, i guess I'll make 7GB for each distro, and just choose the regular stuff that i'm using always. My first install, i was absolutely sure that i'll check out every single thing installed. Guess that's impossible! (well, almost) I mean, 60% of installed packages don't mean anything to me, except space occupation.

The other thing is that I think all the sources should be deleted after installation. Oh, and one question, i know that it's no problem to mount /home on another partition. BUT, /home does not include /root directory, which has to be mounted separately. This kinda creates a difficult situation, unless i just don't use the root user. (i just don't want to occupy space with my files stored in /root) Or are all my worries about space nonsense? Dunno, my partition now has 18 gigs full, and i'm figuring it's the sources of the installation packages.

Well, thanx for the advice everybody.

you shouldn't need to worry about that as you shouldn't be running as root.. and you don't need to be sotring files under root..

It depends. I have linux desktop installed on a smalle 2 gig drive on one box. Typical is more like 5 gig. My setup here has a full 10gig / and a 12gig /home plus various /media and /archive partitions

I have a large file .X.err in my /root folder. This has to do with errors of the X server, right? But why so many? And will it get bigger with time? That's kinda scary...

Anyways, thanx to newegg, i got a new hard drive even a day earlier than it was supposed to arrive. Well, what can i say, i'll start my process today!

thanx to all,
svinka
