Displaying a text file in ascii??

Can anyone fill me in on the command sequence to display a files contents in ascii, character by character, as opposed to the actual text file.

I know I came across this last summer, but the technique has left my memory...

Thanks

Isn't a plain-text file in ASCII format already?

Yes, it is.

What I want to display instead of text is the actual ascii code for each byte of data in the file ...

I'm having trouble putting this question into words as my brain is working like mush today, so I hope my question is understood.

I'm running a perl script on a file to suck out unwanton information. I can't get this one piece nagging piece out, so I figured with all else failing, if I could understand the ascii sequence of this garbage, I would be able to successfully suck it out!!

Thanks again.
