You were able to set your screen resolution to 320x240 in Windows? I've never heard of a resolution that low...I always thought 640x480 was the minimum. Also, if everything on the screen is too big, you actually want to increase your screen resolution; not decrease it...confusing, I know.
Anyway, if you have the cd you used to install Mepis, put it in the cd drive and reboot your computer. When the cd boots into Mepis, log in as root. Is the screen resolution correct, or does everything still look too big? If it's correct, you can copy the xorg.conf file from the cd onto the hard drive and use it instead of the xorg.conf file that is currently on your hard drive.
