display difficulties

I have an unusual problem with my display:

My screen goes blank (off) unless there is some movement with the mouse or some keyboard action. In order to view the screen at all, the mouse or keyboard must be constantly active. There is no delay here - the screen goes blank immediatly when the above conditions are not present.

After a reboot, the screen is OK for awhile. This annoyance occurs anywhere from 1 min to 20 min after the reboot. Restarted the xserver makes no difference.

Here are some hardware details:

Video chipset is SIS620
RAM is 188megs
Shared video ram is 4 megs
Processor is 400

Slackware 9 uses XF86Free 4.3

I have only recently had this problem. Earlier versions of various distributions have not given me this trouble. In fact, I have had to do some unusual things to the XF86Config file to get the display clean. However, this on-off screen problem existed prior to me adding those comments to the file.

If there is anyone knowledgeable on the subject, I would be happy to send a copy of my Config file.

Thanks in advance
Richard

/etc/XF86Config-4

remove Option "DPMS"

See if that helps. It could be something else like acpi, but I hope not.
