Discussion about installing clean real Unix/Linux system
Hello,
People would usually say that Slackware is more Unix than Debian/Ubuntu!
You can be happy to install Debian/Ubuntu/... with the installer, make use of sysvinit, have whatever you want to boot (Grub, Lilo, Syslinux,...)... Of course, it will give you a great operating system.
Well, for those who would like to go a bit further, you can (re)-think about how this operating system works, how it is started, what it is using as memory, dig with processes, how slow or fast is the boot system, how bloated are some apps screwing all the memory,...
You can install and run Linux, based on the large Debian repositories, such as Devuan but you will stay with your Debian anyway. You don't need Devuan at all.
Well, have you ever considered to install Linux without installer/debian-installer but also without the debootsrap?
Have you ever installed a custom Linux, LFS/without any distro? It takes more time to compile, but this is a good fun.
I have not the luxury of time anymore, as I did when I was young. It seems my hacking days are probably done. I started hacking from the days of Windows 11 then I moved on to Gnu/*nix/*nux, hacking remote fax machines and computers --staying in front of cathode boxes overnight using dial-up with doctored batch files and scripts. Yes LFS is even the best way of teaching linux in the school as it is building up an operating system from the scratch. But to think that I needed to build everything <including dependencies> for all applications I am tired already of doing that the Slackware way, because it is the way it was done before, but today, in fact I have become lazy to lean on the Salix sourcery and Gslapt today where dependencies are found almost all in SlackBuilds.org. Time has rather become a more important factor to my productivity than before. The *BSD's also have huge choices in ports. And yes, BSD is as Unix as Solaris.
But I concur to you. That is truly a good fun too.
I recently did the dualboot FreeBSD and LinuxMint 17 in Virtualbox.
I have a spare 1TB SATA internal and I am usually bored, so, I got a 40_custom that works...
