disconnecting from a process without terminating it

I have a program that I must start remotely using an SHH session.

That goes perfectly fine.

I need to logout next, but when I start th program, I just sit there, IN the running program.

If I use ctrl-d or ctrl-z the program gets backgrounded and in this instance it stops running.

How am I supposed to start the program and then cleanly extract myself from it's clutches -while LEAVING it running ?

so that I can cleanly logout of the system and close the SSH session while leaving that program still running..

check out the program "screen"

it'll let you do just that. takes a minute to get ahang of, but works well.

there's also the commandline command:

<program/process start command> &

adding the & to the end of a command will force it to RUN in the background.
